WHAT HAPPENS

Ninety minutes, in six parts

The same shape for a six-year-old and a county player. Only the level of the drills changes.

01

Twenty minutes of rallying

The coach feeds nothing. We want to see how a player behaves in a live rally, not how they look against a basket.

02

Every stroke, once

Forehand, backhand, serve, return and volley, each looked at against the syllabus checkpoints for that age.

03

A movement screen

Fifteen minutes of footwork and change of direction, watched by the S&C coach for squad and elite trials.

04

Something that goes wrong

A drill deliberately pitched above the player’s level. How they respond to it tells us more than the strokes do.

05

Points, played properly

The last half hour is competitive. Scoring, changeovers and a coach umpiring.

06

A conversation, not a verdict

Ten minutes at the end with the player and parents about what we saw and what we would do next.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Nothing is decided on the court

Every trial is discussed by the whole coaching team before a placement is offered.

01

On the day

The coach writes notes against the syllabus checkpoints while the session runs. Nothing is decided on court.

02

Coaches’ meeting

Every trial is discussed at the Monday coaching meeting, so the placement is a team decision rather than one coach’s view.

03

Written assessment

You receive a written assessment within a week: technical notes stroke by stroke, a physical screen, and the group we recommend.

04

Offer and start date

A place is offered with a schedule, a fee and a start date. There is no obligation and no deadline pressure.

WHAT TO BRING

Almost nothing

Trainers with a flat soleNo studs or running spikes. Clay courts need a flat tread.
Water bottleRefill points on court and in the clubhouse.
A racket, if they have oneIf not, say so on the form and one will be waiting at the desk.
Whatever they train inNo academy kit is needed, then or later.
Nothing elseThere is no fee, no form on the day and no kit list.

PARENT ATTENDANCE

Watch, from the loggia

Watch from the loggiaParents are welcome for the whole session, from the covered terrace over court one.
One voice on courtWe ask that coaching during the session comes from the coach only. Children being taught by two voices learn from neither.
Ten minutes at the endThe coach talks to the player first, then to you. Bring questions.
Adults trial aloneAdult trials are a group session with the coach. No audience required.
