Where the money went on the Ebor Handicap

A 9.0 favourite drifting to 11.0 by the off, and what the late movement actually signalled.

Where the money went on the Ebor Handicap
A drift on a ground-dependent horse is information, not noise.

Silverdale opened at 9.00 on Tuesday morning, was 10.00 by noon and went off at 11.00. He finished ninth. The drift was the clearest signal the market sent all week, and we published a pick against it — which is worth writing about, because the reason we were wrong is more useful than the result.

The going changed. Elmsworth was good-to-soft on Monday evening and good by the off, after a dry night and a warm morning, and Silverdale’s best form is on softer ground. The market noticed at about nine on Tuesday, when the clerk of the course issued the update, and the money that had come for him overnight went elsewhere. Two of the horses that shortened — both good-ground performers — finished first and third.

The lesson is about time rather than about horses. A drift that starts with an official announcement is not noise; it is the market absorbing a fact. Our pick was published on Sunday and not revisited on Tuesday morning, which the update log on the prediction now records. The each-way terms and best odds guaranteed at Tallow paid the bigger price on a horse that finished out of the places — which is to say they paid nothing, as they should.

The record by sport on the predictions page shows racing at three wins from nine this year. The number is honest and the sample is tiny, and the column will keep saying both.
