Learn how betting works before you stake
Twenty-seven guides across six topics, written by the same team that tests the bookmakers. No tipping, no systems — the arithmetic, the market rules and the habits that keep betting sustainable.
ALL GUIDES
Grouped by topic
Each topic runs from beginner to advanced. The starred guide in each group is the one to read first.
Start here
Everything you need before your first bet — how a bookmaker makes money, and how not to hand it over faster than you have to.
Odds & probability
The arithmetic that decides whether a bet is worth making. None of it is difficult, and all of it is ignored by most bettors.
Markets
What each market actually settles on. Most disputes we hear about are rule misunderstandings, not bad luck.
Strategy & bankroll
How to stake, when to stop, and what a losing month actually means. The least glamorous guides here and the most useful.
Payments & accounts
Getting money in and out without surprises — and what to do when a withdrawal stalls.
Responsible betting
The tools every licensed bookmaker offers, and how to use them before you need them.
Nothing matches that search
Try a market name (handicap, totals), a concept (margin, value) or a level.
IF YOU ARE NEW
Six guides, in this order
About an hour of reading in total. It will not make you a winning bettor — nothing will guarantee that — but it will stop you paying for the same lessons twice.
GLOSSARY
Six terms worth knowing
Pulled from the full ninety-term glossary — the ones that come up most often in reader questions.
Overround
The bookmaker’s margin, expressed as how far a market’s implied probabilities exceed 100%.
Closing line
The final price before an event starts — the market’s best estimate of the true odds.
Push
A bet where the result lands exactly on the line and stakes are returned.
Dead heat
A tied placing in racing, settled by dividing the stake by the number of runners tied.
Stake factoring
A limit on how much a specific account can bet, applied per market.
Vig-free price
An odds figure with the bookmaker’s margin mathematically removed.
