A pace bet that the first three quarters supported and the fourth did not. Two hundred and twenty points in a game we expected to clear two hundred and thirty, and a straightforward loss to record.

Why the over

Summit play the third-fastest pace in the league at home and Phoenix the fifth, two of the last three meetings had cleared 228.5 comfortably, and Phoenix were without the centre whose absence has cost them six points a game defensively this season. The line looked two or three points low against the rest-adjusted numbers, and 1.88 was the best of an unusually flat market.

What went wrong

The game was on pace for 236 through three quarters and then both sides went cold from range in a fourth quarter of forty-one combined points, with two minutes of free-throw shooting the only scoring in the last three. That is variance rather than a misread — but the two-bar rating was still generous for a totals bet in August, when rotations are shortest and fourth quarters are least predictable, and we have said so in the record.
