The opening weekend’s most obvious goals fixture, and one the market had priced almost right. It landed, narrowly, with a corner in the seventy-first minute — the set piece we said both defences had been leaking from all summer.

Why over 2.5 goals

Neither keeper had kept a clean sheet in five matches, both sides had conceded from set pieces in their last four, and the three previous meetings had produced eleven goals. Hartwell without Ricaldi had shipped two or more in every pre-season match, and Tyneport’s Bardsen was a late fitness test. A 1.80 price implied 55.6%; the fixture history and the defensive absences put it nearer 65%, which is why this one carried three bars.

How it went

Two goals in the first half, one each, then forty minutes in which the line looked in danger before a corner was headed in at the far post. A win, but a reminder that a three-bar pick at 1.80 is still a bet that loses more than a third of the time — the sixty-minute wait for the third goal was not comfortable, and it should not have been.
