Why the Continental League semi-finals are the sharpest market of the summer

Four teams, three weeks and a pricing model that has not caught up with roster changes. We break down where the value sits, which markets have already corrected, and which of our tipsters have been calling it early.

Every summer the same thing happens. Rosters turn over in June, the models keep running on last season’s minutes, and for about three weeks the prices on continental basketball are softer than they have any right to be. This year the gap is wider than usual.

The market has not caught up

Between the four qualified teams, eleven rotation players changed clubs since the last competitive fixture. Two of those moves involved starting point guards. The pricing on tempo-dependent markets — totals above all — is still anchored to a version of these teams that no longer exists.

That is not a criticism of the books. It is a structural lag: the sample is small, preseason data is noisy, and nobody wants to move a line 4.5 points on the strength of three friendlies. But it does mean the first two rounds are priced on assumptions rather than evidence.

The edge is not in knowing who wins. It is in knowing which number stopped being true in June.

Where the roster maths breaks

Three of the four teams lost a top-two minutes leader. Strip those minutes out, redistribute them at each squad’s replacement-level efficiency, and the projected point differentials move by between 2.1 and 5.4 points a game. The market has moved by roughly half that.

  • Ellisford — lost 31% of assisted possessions; the pace projection drops hardest here.
  • Calderon — the most stable roster of the four, and the only team we would lay a price on.
  • Redcliff — added size, lost shooting. Totals should fall and have not.
  • Bayside — unchanged, and priced as though that were an advantage.

Our read on the four teams

Calderon are the only side of the four we would take a position on at the current price, and even then only on the total. Ellisford are the most damaged and the most likely to be over-corrected against by the second round. Redcliff and Bayside are close enough that the market is right to price them as it has — the value there is in the totals, not the sides.

The pick this comes down to

Our model projects a 151.8 total for the first semi-final with a standard error of 5.9. At 158.5 the market sits 6.7 points above projection — a 4.4% edge at the current price, comfortably outside the error bar.

What would change our mind

Two things. If either semi-final loses a listed starter in the 48 hours before tip-off, the total moves for a reason and our number is stale. And if the opening rounds come in fast — above 165 combined possessions — the tempo assumption is simply wrong and we stand down for the final.
