Tomás Bekele grew up on the supporters’ coaches. His father ran the Kingsway branch for a decade, and Bekele estimates he saw forty away grounds from the back seat before he saw one from the pitch.
“I know what a Tuesday night in Rivermouth costs,” he says. “The time off, the fuel, the sandwiches. We owe the travelling support a performance every single time. That is not a slogan for me; it is family.”
The Westport comeback
Two goals down with twenty minutes left on the coast, it was Bekele who pulled the side together at the drinks break. His equaliser in the 88th minute was his first goal for eighteen months.
“I looked at the away end at 2–0 and nobody had left. Not one. You cannot let people like that go home with nothing.”
