The Meridian Academy

Bring through our own

Founded at Fairlow in 2004, the academy runs ten age groups from Under 9 to Under 21. Six of the current first team came through it, and nine players have made a competitive debut since 2019.

How it is built

Three Phases

Ten age groups in three phases, each with its own coaching emphasis and weekly load.

Phase 01

Foundation phase

Under 9 to Under 11Two sessions and one match a week

Technique, first touch and enjoying the ball. No league tables and no published results.

Phase 02

Youth development

Under 12 to Under 16Three sessions and one match a week

Position-specific work, decision making under pressure and the club shape from Under 12 up.

Phase 03

Professional development

Under 17 to Under 21Full-time, five days a week

Full-time training alongside education, with first-team sessions for the closest to a debut.

How we coach

Coaching Philosophy

Four commitments that apply in every session, from the Under 9 dome to the Under 21 fixture list.

01

Play out from the back

Every age group builds from the goalkeeper, whatever the pitch, the weather or the score.

02

One shape, ten age groups

The same 4-2-3-1 from Under 9 to the first team, so a promotion changes the level and not the job.

03

Coach the person

Education, welfare and a mentor for every scholar. Twenty-two of twenty-four scholars are in full-time study.

04

Local first

Two thirds of the academy live within twelve miles of Fairlow, and no player under twelve travels more than an hour.

“We are judged on debuts, not trophies. Nine players have walked out at Kingsway Park since 2019 — that is the number that matters here.”
Gareth VaneHead of academy since 2019

Frequently asked

Academy
Does a trial cost anything?

No. Trials are free, and so is every session in the academy — the club pays for kit, travel to fixtures and education.

What should my child bring?

Boots, shin pads, a drink and a parent or guardian. Training kit and bibs are provided on the day.

How many places are there?

It varies by age group. Around forty players attend each trial and the coaches invite what they need for the squad.

When will we hear back?

Within ten days of the trial, by phone from the lead coach for that age group — whatever the answer.
