Where a number comes from a model rather than a record, we say so in the sentence that uses it.<\/p>\n<p>We do not publish transfer rumours, aggregated claims from other outlets, or &#8220;reports suggest&#8221; copy. If another publication has something we cannot confirm, we either verify it ourselves and credit them, or we leave it alone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"anps-legal__rules\"><span class=\"anps-legal__note-label\">The rules, plainly<\/span><ul class=\"anps-legal__checks\"><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Two independent sources for any allegation about a named person.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Right of reply offered before publication, with a stated deadline, in every case.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Statistics carry their source and date; models carry a link to the method.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Nothing is published because a competitor has it.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/section><section class=\"anps-legal__section\" id=\"sources\"><div class=\"anps-legal__head\"><span class=\"anps-legal__icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg class=\"anps-icon\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\"><use href=\"#anps-i-users\"><\/use><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"anps-legal__ordinal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">02<\/span><h2 class=\"anps-legal__heading\">Sources<\/h2><\/div><p class=\"anps-legal__lead\">Named wherever possible, counted and characterised when not.<\/p><p>Anonymity is granted when a source faces a real professional or personal risk, and only with an editor\u2019s approval. We then tell readers how many sources there are and what access they had \u2014 &#8220;three people with direct knowledge of the negotiation&#8221; rather than &#8220;sources&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>We do not pay for interviews or information. We accept normal press access, and we declare travel or accommodation paid by a club, federation or sponsor at the foot of the piece.<\/p>\n<div class=\"anps-legal__rules\"><span class=\"anps-legal__note-label\">The rules, plainly<\/span><ul class=\"anps-legal__checks\"><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">An editor always knows the identity of an anonymous source.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">We never reveal a confidential source \u2014 to anyone, under any pressure.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Quotes are not composited, tidied beyond removing verbal filler, or moved between answers.<\/li><li class=\"anps-legal__check\">Off-the-record means unpublishable, not &#8220;publishable without a name&#8221;.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/section><section class=\"anps-legal__section\" id=\"corrections\"><div class=\"anps-legal__head\"><span class=\"anps-legal__icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><svg class=\"anps-icon\" width=\"18\" height=\"18\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" aria-hidden=\"true\" focusable=\"false\"><use href=\"#anps-i-pencil\"><\/use><\/svg><\/span><span class=\"anps-legal__ordinal\" aria-hidden=\"true\">03<\/span><h2 class=\"anps-legal__heading\">Corrections<\/h2><\/div><p class=\"anps-legal__lead\">At the top of the piece, dated, saying what changed.<\/p><p>A correction is added to the head of the article, never the bottom, and never silently. It states the date, what was wrong and what the correct fact is. The original wording stays visible in the note where doing so is clearer for the reader.<\/p>\n<p>Typographical fixes inside twenty minutes of publication are not logged. Anything that changes meaning is. We do not use generative tools to draft articles, headlines, standfirsts, captions or newsletter copy, and we do not publish AI-generated images or video of real events.<\/p>\n<p>We do use software for tasks where the output is checked in full by a journalist: transcribing our own interview recordings, translating a quote which is then verified by a speaker of that language, searching document sets, and building statistical models whose method we publish. Declarations are held by the editor-in-chief and reviewed annually; the ones that could affect coverage are disclosed in the piece itself.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody covers a club they hold a financial interest in or have worked for in the previous three years. Journalists do not bet on any sport we cover, and do not appear in advertising.
