It is two bets, each with the full stake you typed, and the second one \u2014 the place part \u2014 is priced by a rule rather than by the market. Understanding that rule is what decides whether each-way is a good bet or two mediocre ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"halves\">The two halves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00a310 each-way is \u00a320: \u00a310 on the horse to win at the full price, and \u00a310 on it to finish in the places at a fraction of that price. Back a 9.00 shot each-way at a fifth of the odds and the place bet pays 1 + (8 \u00f7 5) = 2.60. If it wins, both halves pay: \u00a380 plus \u00a316 profit. Big handicaps such as the Ebor often carry enhanced terms \u2014 five or six places \u2014 as a promotion, and Pelagic pays a quarter of the odds where the market standard is a fifth. Check the terms on the card, not the rules page: they vary by race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group anps-post-betting__callout is-note is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"anps-post-betting__callout-title wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dead heats<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two horses tied for the last place means your place stake is halved and paid at the full place price. A \u00a310 place bet at 2.60 in a two-way dead heat returns \u00a313, not \u00a326. The rule divides the stake, not the odds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sense\">When each-way makes sense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The place half is good value when the fraction is generous relative to the number of places and the horse is likelier to place than its win price suggests \u2014 a consistent runner at a big price in a large field. It is poor value on a short-priced favourite, where a fifth of 3.00 is 1.40 for a place it will get most of the time.
