Goals in a football match, points in a basketball game, games in a tennis match. You do not need a view on the winner, only on the shape of the contest, which is why totals are the market most of our predictions use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"settles\">How the line settles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most common line is a half number \u2014 over 2.5 goals \u2014 because it cannot be tied. Three goals or more and over wins; two or fewer and under wins. A whole line, over 3, can land exactly: three goals is a push and stakes are returned. Bookmakers offer both, and the whole line is usually a shade shorter on the side that would push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"asian\">Asian totals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 2.75 is half your stake on over 2.5 and half on over 3. Three goals wins the first half and pushes the second, so you get half a win. Over 2.25 is half on 2 and half on 2.5: two goals pushes the first half and loses the second. The quarter lines let the bookmaker set a price between the two whole numbers, and let you take a position that is not all-or-nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group anps-post-betting__callout is-note is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"anps-post-betting__callout-title wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Which line to take<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your view is \u201cgoals are likely\u201d take the half line and accept the price. If your view is \u201cthree goals is the most likely single outcome\u201d the 2.75 gives you a partial win on exactly that result. Only take the whole line when the push protects a position you genuinely want protected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"count\">What settles the count<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list anps-post-betting__list\">\n<li>Ninety minutes plus stoppage time in football. Extra time and penalties do not count unless the market says so.<\/li>\n\n<li>Overtime counts in basketball and American football unless the market says regulation only.<\/li>\n\n<li>Tennis game totals count every game played, including tie-breaks as one game; a retirement usually voids the bet, and the tennis retirement rules differ by operator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Totals margins are the second-lowest in football at around 4.0% in our August measurement, and the main line on a big match is usually the sharpest number a bookmaker publishes.
