This is the short version of our ninety-term glossary \u2014 the words that appear on a slip, in a set of terms, or in a review on this site, explained once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"prices\">Prices and markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list anps-post-betting__list\">\n<li><strong>Odds, price<\/strong> \u2014 the same thing. What the bookmaker will pay if you are right, expressed in decimal, fractional or American format.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Implied probability<\/strong> \u2014 one divided by the decimal price. What the price says the chance is.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Overround, margin, vig, juice<\/strong> \u2014 the amount by which a market\u2019s implied probabilities exceed 100%. The bookmaker\u2019s built-in edge.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Market<\/strong> \u2014 one question about an event, with a price on each answer. Match result, total goals and first scorer are three markets on the same match.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Line<\/strong> \u2014 the number a handicap or total is set at: \u22121.5, 2.5 goals, 228.5 points.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Closing line<\/strong> \u2014 the final price before the event starts. The market\u2019s best estimate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bets\">Bets and settlement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list anps-post-betting__list\">\n<li><strong>Single, double, accumulator<\/strong> \u2014 one selection, two, or several combined so every one must win.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Each-way<\/strong> \u2014 two bets of equal stake: one to win and one to place. The place part pays a fraction of the win price.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Push<\/strong> \u2014 a bet where the result lands exactly on the line. Stakes are returned.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Void<\/strong> \u2014 a bet cancelled because the event did not happen as the rules require. Stakes are returned.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Cash-out<\/strong> \u2014 an offer to settle a bet before the event ends, at a price the bookmaker sets. It carries its own margin.<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>Settled<\/strong> \u2014 decided and paid.
