Once you can take the disguise off, three different formats stop being confusing and start being the same number written three ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"decimal\">Decimal odds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decimal is the format we use across this site because it needs no arithmetic to read. The number is your total return for every \u00a31 staked, stake included. A price of 2.50 returns \u00a32.50 on a \u00a31 bet \u2014 \u00a31.50 of winnings plus the \u00a31 you put down. A price of 1.50 returns \u00a31.50, so the winnings are 50p.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To convert any decimal price into a probability, divide one by it. 2.50 becomes 40%. 1.50 becomes 66.7%. That percentage is what the bookmaker is telling you it thinks the chance is, plus its margin \u2014 a subject that gets its own guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"fractional\">Fractional and American<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fractional odds are the British tradition: 6\/4 means you win \u00a36 for every \u00a34 staked, and the stake comes back on top. Add the two numbers and divide by the second to get the decimal \u2014 6\/4 is 10 \u00f7 4 = 2.50. American odds put a plus or minus in front of a three-figure number: +150 means \u00a3150 won on a \u00a3100 stake, \u2212200 means \u00a3200 staked to win \u00a3100. Both are 2.50 and 1.50 in decimal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group anps-post-betting__callout is-note is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"anps-post-betting__callout-title wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The one conversion you need<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decimal = (numerator \u00f7 denominator) + 1 for fractions. For American odds, a plus number is (odds \u00f7 100) + 1; a minus number is (100 \u00f7 odds) + 1.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"probability\">Why the probability is what matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two bookmakers can show you 6\/4 and 2.45 for the same outcome and most people will not notice they are different prices. Converted to probabilities they are 40% and 40.8%, and the second one is worse for you. Every guide on this site assumes you have done this conversion, because it is the only way to compare what you are actually being offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list anps-post-betting__list\">\n<li>Switch every bookmaker account you hold to decimal in the settings. It removes a step from every comparison.<\/li>\n\n<li>A shorter price is a bigger probability \u2014 and a bigger share of your stake kept by the bookmaker if it is wrong.<\/li>\n\n<li>The prices in a market always add up to more than 100%.
