We look at the forehand, we look at the movement, we take notes on both — and then we spend the term rebuilding the serve. Parents find this odd, and they are right to. The serve is usually not the stroke costing a player matches at thirteen.

It is the stroke that will cost them matches at seventeen, which is a different question, and the only one we can still answer cheaply now.

The serve is the only stroke nobody else can spoil

Every other stroke in tennis is a reaction. The ball arrives at a height, a speed and a spin that somebody else chose, and the player responds. That makes technical work on those strokes conditional: a groundstroke rebuilt in a feeding drill can fall apart the moment a live ball behaves unexpectedly, and the coach cannot always tell whether the problem is the swing or the situation.

The serve has none of that. It starts from a stationary ball, thrown by the player, at a moment of their choosing. If it goes wrong, the cause is inside the technique, and it can be found. That makes it the most reliable diagnostic we have, and the most durable investment.

A stroke that only works when the player is calm is not a stroke. It is a rehearsal.

Marta Silveira

What we actually change

Rebuilding a serve does not mean starting from nothing. In practice it means four checkpoints, taken in order, and never more than one at a time:

01The throw
Consistent height, slightly in front, released from a straight arm. Most junior serve problems are throw problems wearing a technical disguise.

02The trophy position
Shoulders tilted, hitting elbow up, weight loaded on the back leg. We hold this position statically before it is ever swung through.

03The pronation
The forearm turns through contact rather than the wrist snapping down. This is where a flat serve stops being a push and starts being a strike.

04The landing
Inside the court, on the front foot, balanced enough to play the next ball. A serve that finishes off balance is a serve that ends the point one way or the other.

A player is not moved to the next checkpoint until the previous one holds under a live ball rather than in a demonstration. That usually takes between four and eight weeks per checkpoint at squad level, which is why the whole rebuild takes a term.

Trophy-position work with the county squad. Held statically, then swung, then served, over about a fortnight.

Why the second serve gets the most time

Ask a fourteen-year-old which serve they practise and they will tell you about their first. Ask them which one decides their matches and they will pause. At every level below the professional tour, the second serve is the stroke that separates players, because it is the only one hit under guaranteed pressure and with a guaranteed consequence.

So the second serve is trained daily on the elite programme and in every squad session, always at the end of a block when players are tired, and often with a scoring consequence attached. A double fault in a practice game costs two points, not one. Players hate it. It is the single most effective thing we do.

Ask them which serve decides their matches and they will pause. That pause is the whole argument.

Marta Silveira

What it looks like from the loggia

For a term, it can look like very little is happening. A player rebuilding a serve serves worse before they serve better, loses to opponents they used to beat, and comes off court frustrated. This is the part we try hardest to explain to parents in advance, because it is the point at which families most often ask whether the coaching is working.

The answer we give is the same one the syllabus gives: a stroke built to survive pressure takes longer to learn than one built to win under-fourteen matches. We accept slower progress at eight for much faster progress at fourteen, and slower progress across one term for a serve that is still standing at eighteen.

Serve targets, indoor court one

Ball-toss consistency drill

Shoulder and trunk work, twice weekly

How to tell whether it worked

Not by the speed gun. We chart three things across a season: first-serve percentage under pressure points, double faults per set in the third set specifically, and the number of second serves attacked by the opponent. All three appear in the termly written review, and all three usually move in the wrong direction before they move in the right one.

By the second season, the players who went through it are the ones who hold serve at 4-5 in a third set.
